My last few posts have been about the Trail. I want to get back to what is on the Withlacoochee State Trail. Specifically, dogs!
Some people like to coo at babies, some folks like to people watch – I have always been on alert for dogs. What nice animals! What great companions! Although we grew up with dogs and had them in adulthood, my husband and I never found a way to have a dog together. Undoubtedly, there will be a dog sometime down the road for me.
I enjoy looking at small dogs – terriers, Shih Tzus, Chihuahuas, beagles. I like mid and large size dogs, too – golden retrievers, Labrador retrievers, German shepherds. And of course, mutts of all shapes and sizes are delightful. And even better, if the owner gives me permission, I enjoy greeting and petting them.
Some of the dogs know the park service and sheriff cars that patrol the Trail may carry treats. One of my friends used to carry treats on his bike; if the owner was amenable, he would hand out a treat to an eager dog. I heard he tended to stop more often if the owner was an attractive woman, but I’m sure I’m mistaken . . . .
A few years ago my husband and I were honored to take care of a yellow lab for a few days. He definitely knew Trail vehicles likely had treats onboard, and he knew to scour the grass alongside the Trail for tasty leftovers like banana peels. (Really? Gag me!) Now you all know how wonderful labs are – well-mannered, handsome and friendly. We practically strutted down the Trail with this one on a leash, knowing that we were the envy of everyone. We walked into downtown Inverness and lunched outside at the Deco Café Catering; Sherri Spaulding’s staff immediately supplied a water bowl for his comfort. To have a great dog like him alongside us, we were rock stars!
